Why Life Groups?

"We should not think of our fellowship with other Christians as a spiritual luxury, and optional addition to the exercises of private devotions. Fellowship is one of the great words of the New Testament: it denotes something that is vital to a Christian's spiritual health, and cetnral to the Church's true life ... The church will flourish and Christians will be strong only when there is fellowship." --J.I. Packer, God's Words (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1981), p. 193.

Throughout out the years we have encouraged everyone at Devonshire to be a part of a Life Group. "Why?" ... You may ask.

Here's why. We believe that the Christian life is meant to be a shared life. We are called to encourage one another to love and good deeds (Heb. 10:25), to carry one another's burdens (Gal. 6:2), and to exercise our spiritual gifts for the building up of the body of Christ, the church. This kind of fellowship isn't practical for our Sunday morning gatherings. Our desire is that everyone be in Christian community where you are being encouraged and prayed with and prayed for.

This is why we are committed to Life Groups. "By [God's} grace, together we are being changed into the image of Jesus Christ through progressive sanctification. Together we are experiencing mutual care, genuine fellowship, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We no longer just see—we observe. We no longer simply attend—we participate. We no longer selfishly consume—instead we are carrying out God’s purpose for our lives as we contribute to the building of the local church. (C.J. Mahaney, Why Small Groups?)
